How It Works

Most glass jobs follow the same four steps. Whether it starts with a board-up depends on how exposed the property is.

  1. Make Safe

Loose and broken glass removed, and the opening boarded if it can’t be left secure overnight.

  2. Survey & Measure

Measured properly, not guessed. A few millimetres out and a unit won’t sit on its packers or seal against the gaskets.

  3. Order the Glass

Made to the exact size and spec. Toughened glass can’t be cut once it’s made, so the measurement has to be right first time.

  4. Fit & Clear Up

Glazed back in on new packers, with gaskets or beads renewed where needed. The old glass and boarding are taken away.

Boarding Up and Make-Safe

When a pane has been smashed, is missing, or a door can’t be locked, the first job is to protect the property. Boarding up is a short-term measure. It secures the opening, keeps the weather out and stops anyone getting hurt on what’s left of the glass until the replacement is fitted.

It’s usually needed after a break-in, vandalism, an accident, or a pane that has simply failed. For a shop, it means stock is protected and the unit can be locked up for the night. For a home or a rental property, it means it’s secure while the right glass is ordered.

A typical call-out goes like this: make the opening safe, fit the boarding, and take the glass sizes and spec while we’re there. That way the permanent replacement is already being ordered rather than waiting on a second visit to measure.

Boarding isn’t a substitute for proper glass, but it’s often the sensible first move. It also gives you time to compare options or sort out an insurance claim before the permanent repair is confirmed.

Getting It Right Depends on the Opening

The right approach depends on the frame, the type of glass and how it’s held in. A uPVC window with internal beads, a shopfront with external pressure plates and a frameless screen with clamps are three very different jobs, even when the glass is the same size. That’s why we measure and check the frame before quoting the replacement.

Priced on Survey

Glass prices depend on the size, the type of glass, access and the condition of the frame, so every job is priced individually. Send a photo and a rough size and we’ll tell you what’s involved.
